Gorillas make statement in opening round of CIF-SS Playoffs
“I thought our nerves got the best of us a bit in the first set,” said Duncan.
Eventually Oakwood settled in, led by a series of strong serves by Katin Sakai, who finished the match with a team high 5 aces.
Oakwood dominated the second set, opening on a 7-2 run, adding runs of 8-4 and 10-6, closing out Savanna 25-12 to take an early two sets to none lead.
“We settled down in the second set and played well, finishing things off strong in the third.”
Laura Mazur led the Gorillas attack offensively with 14 kills, while Mazie Watson added 38 assists.
Survive and advance. That is the goal in the playoffs.
Oakwood Girls Volleyball did that and more, sweeping Savanna 25-22, 25-12,25-18 in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division 8 playoffs.
“Were excited to move on to the second round for the third season in a row,” said Gorillas Head Coach Ryan Duncan.
Things started off slowly for both teams as each was a little tight to open the game.
Mazur and Lydia Pretlow each had 10 digs defensively as the Gorillas did a nice job limiting the Rebels offensive in the second set.
The third set star ted out tight, with teams trading points, but Oakwood would pull ahead for good on Ava Sato's serve, earning 5 straight points.
From there the Gorillas didn't look back, using a mid set 10-4 run before closing out Savanna 25-18 to complete the sweep.
Oakwood next plays Capistrano Valley Christian on Thursday, November 2nd, in the Oakwood Gymnasium, time still to be determined.
